Description

The Great Patriotic War: Nazi Germany vs. the Soviet Union is a fast-paced wargame that reproduces the circumstances, the events, and the forces that fought the fiercest war in history. Using wargame techniques, The Great Patriotic War simulates the operations, battles, and conflicts of the war; wargame systems make it an enjoyable conflict game for two people.

The gameplay features monthly turns, 40 miles per hex and there are 240 counters representing corps and armies. Playing time ranges from the 1 hour Introductory scenario to the 8 hour Campaign game, with five historical scenarios detailing Operations Barbarossa, Fall Blau, Kursk, Stalingrad, and Bagration.

It also includes an introductory wargame (now available for free download) called Battle for Moscow, using similar wargame systems.

Inferior game covering east front WWII. Easy to learn, though, so a good novice game. Must use some variants to have play balance.

Definitely plays better with the variant on the sequence of play (allowing infantry that start the mech phase NOT in any enemy ZOC to move half their movement allowance), though I suspect this change tilts the game's play balance to far in the other direction. I would like to get in more time with the game with this change. Overall I actually like this better than Russian Campaign.

My first wargame. Classic hex and counter variety and easy to get into.

Shoot first, move second.

Simple hex and counter E.Front game similar to the Russian Front. Dated CRT, not much chrome, dull experience. I think Dark Valley or Stalins War would serve better.

By
Not that I'll ever try to play it again. I own it just for the Battle for Moscow game inside.

Changes the standard move-fight sequence to fight-move. Rather than a benefit, a second edition of rules was required to prevent the Russians from just withdrawing one space every turn. What could be more obvious? Stick with the better standard east front games like Russian Campaign and Russian Front.

One of the most playable games about the Russian campaign.

This looks like a noble attempt at a light hex & counter Barbarossa game. The mechanics, units and map scale would have basically made it a nice little upgrade of The Russian Campaign. Unfortunately, it's all undone by a completely botched sequence of play that makes it damn near impossible to attack with the Germans. How did this get past playtesting?

Fun and easy, not too realistic.

One of my first wargames. Long but very enjoyable. Need to try newer East Front ones as this one seems to be now outdated.

A disappointment, lacking in flavor. I haven't tried it with Chadwick's changes, though.

Was not a fan of this game, although it had some potential at the time it was published; there just weren't a lot of low complexity, fast playing Russian front games out there at the time, suitable as an introductory wargame and that did a good job at recreating the war. Glad to see some were able to add house rules that got the game to work. I lost patience and moved on to other titles.

With the updated rules from Frank Chadwick (available here on BGG), this is an excellent East Front game.

I do like the easy-going feeling of this game but the system fails to give realistic results (like the Germans being unable to go beyond Minsk and Kiev in 1941). I eventually made my own version of the rules, changing deeply the mecanics. I'm rather satisfied of the result as the game now provide very historical situation. But I can't say fun match time involved.

Good game, but not quite as playable as The Russian Campaign. More colorful map and pieces, however.

too many games to play, and the map is pink AND ugly

Some interesting aspects, like combat before movement, that never really worked properly. Surpassed by other, better games.

Broken system that makes it impossible to mount an offensive if your opponent shifts his units back a hex during his turn. Gee, why didn't the Soviets think of that.

5 out of 10
By
Ambitious attempt to take the system used in the freebie Battle for Moscow and use it to simulate all of Eastern Front WWII. The Battle for Moscow sequence of play--mechanized movement, combat, general movement--was always odd because infantry generally couldn't attack unless the opponent was nice enough to not withdraw one hex on his turn. It seemed to work okay in that game, but it just doesn't work here. There's simply no way that you will see anything like the historical German blitzkrieg of 1941. Instead, it will be a slow advance, and the designer appears to have shortchanged the Russians some replacement points to make up for this deficiency. Not one of Frank Chadwick's better efforts.

A very good design. I doubt I will try another strategic game game on the Russian campaign. The rule are well written without bug. furthermore you are enjoying..

Needs the Stacking and Reserve Infantry rules from Frank's "Campaign in Russia" series by VPG to make this a much better game Been nice if the map didn't have pastel colors and that Pink in it!

Excellant game, better each player decides weather to attack first or move first with his units.

Good game, easy to play, however, doesn't seem to play out as well or as tensely as TAHG's Russian Front. I still enjoyed it, easy to solitaire.

A fairly good and fast game. WWII in the East can be played in one afternoon. But it is very "basic" anyway

Lots more house rules, lots more fun! (Must have the updated rules as well and there is a lot of them.) Game would be a 3 if it was just out of the box with no rule changes.

Another game that I think gets unjustly bashed. Not as much fun as TRC to play, but no doubt is more historical (using the Chadwick rules ammendments).

Punched.

the battle for Moscow was such a sweet game. but dang did the system fall down on this one!

By
Very nice counters but that flesh coloured map??!!?? Well the counters do stand out well at least....

By
A treatment on the Moscow campaign in the late 80's before GDW closing down. Frank Chadwick is a good designer in grasping the key factors and produce a system that is playable, fun and realsitic to a certain degree. However, GDW designs also risk being to skim on the water surface, not offering much in-depth historical insights that the wargamers are seriously looking after. Anyhow, this game is a fine addition to anyone interested in the final defense of the Soviet capital.

Well difficult to judge such an ols wargame on current standards. It is one of the versions of the Russian campaign 41-45 that I have got and I am not sure I would replay it. A good thing: there is a mini wargame about the Moscow campaign to initiate newcomers to wargame.

A very great game that allows to play the whole war in the east in about 12 hours. The rules are simple (with an original sequence of play) but give a rather historical result. Just played it again and raised my rating to 9. it is a real pleasure to play this game.

This game doesn't really work, but because of its simplicity I cannot totally rule out playing it again.

I played it three times and 1941 german offensive always bogged down on Leningrad-Smolensk-Kiev-Odessa line. One of the ugliest map ever designed

easy to play easy to finish less than 10 hours to play the east front... my preference goes to Uranus until 1945

A game with the virtue of being very simple and easy to play. However, the combat results table encourages the defending Soviets to counterattack, as its the best way to attrite the German via exchange results. There's also the sense that the Soviet reinforcements arrive a tad slowly, so the tendency is for the Germans to win via attrition.

By
Never got to play it. Finally accepted it wasn't going to happen and sold it.

I eagerly bought this game sight unseen when first released. Ignored the poor graphics and prepared it for PBM. My opponent and I quickly realized it was trench warfare in the east. The game simply doesn't work on several levels. I stopped Chadwick at a con and asked him what happened. He replied by saying the developer was "let go" shortly after the game's release. Alan Emrich tried in vain to re-develop it, but never brought it to fruition. Game best classified as an abortion and perhaps one reason why GDW folded.

By far, my favorite wargame of all time. Simplicity in play, complex in execution, the play of this game has led to me to wish to see other fronts of WW II handled in this format.

Grandchild of The Russian Campaign, and a pretty good one to boot. I like the Russian perspective, although the salmon-colored map is a real eyesore.

Nice alternative to "The Russian Campaign". Has a unusual fight first then move design.

By
Have Road to Moscow in it.

This was early on maligned as a 'The Russian Campaign' wanna be. But with rule fixes by the designer (see links here or at grognards), I think this works well on it's own steam.

By
I liked Battle for Moscow so much I just had to have this one too. Unfortunatly it did not work as well as the former. Maybe the suggested fix by Frank C will make this a more playable game finaly.

One might say that there are better games on the topic and he'd be right. But this one is a good blend, it's not too difficult and you can play from 22th june 1941 until 8th may 1945. Counters are nice but the pink map is ugly.

Armored movement phase, combat phase then all unit movement phase. If an infantry corps doesn't want to defend and is ok to retreat 70 km to avoid a combat when facing attacking infantry, doesn't it seems less realistic than the classical "all mvt, combat, armored mvt". And it does work ! The german advance is historical. Lot of comment stating that "just retreat one hex the russian unit every turn". That's not as simple as this. Or they didn't realize that motorized unit can move before the combat phase. Motorized unit will do a breach and then all unit will move in in the general movement phase. love this game, for wargamer who are looking for strategy rather than details I saw that Frank Chadwick himself put a file to fix the "major problem to the game" ??? Come on ! The major problem of the game was that the rules were unclear and a lot of personal work had to be done, the special sequence of play of this game is what make it a good game.
