Description

Do not confuse this with the other Reiner Knizia Circus Flohcati. This is a very different game.

From the rules:

"The Flea Ring Circus is about to begin! But the cats and dogs are still deciding which show to watch. Fill your tent with the most spectators and win the game as the most successful ring master."

A simple cardgame with a circus or carnival theme. Players play cards (generally one at a time) representing fire breathers, animal trainers, clowns, cotton-candy vendors, etc., in an effort to attract spectators who, depending on what card is played, can be taken from a pool or from another player.

Cards - 12 yellow clowns, 6 pink acrobats, 2 orange animal control vehicles, 12 x number 2 cards (4 each of green, orange and blue), 12 x number 3 cards (4 each of mauve, orange and blue), 4 x number 4 cards (green), 7 ticket cards.

Kids game, or something real quick for casual gamers

By
Neat little child's game. Does what it does well. I'm reluctant to score it since it clearly isn't aimed at me!

It's fun to play with the kids. I don't think this'll come out on a game night with adults, unless we need a quick filler.

one of most favorite of our early days!

Great for kids!

It was fast and glossy, but I'm not sure it was fun. Seems like it would be better with more players, but the rules are a little complicated for younger kids. Update: Same rating, but decent for kids. Not enough decisions, though, for adults.

The components really make this game. It's mostly luck, but the cute cats and dogs plus the bright colourful cards make it fun.

Very much a children's game.

Very quick and silly filler with little depth. But it's passingly interesting for a cool down game. Or something to play with young kids. The plastic animals are great victory points. At about 10 minutes a game, it doesn't overstay its welcome. That's about the highest praise I can manage.

Interesting light little filler. I've only played this one once and I'm not sure which way it would move with additional plays.

06+, 2-6 players, best with 4, 10 mins. Have lost one cat for this but just use a small Schleich cat. Cards - 12 yellow clowns, 6 pink acrobats, 2 orange animal control vehicles, 12 x number 2 cards (4 each of green, orange and blue), 12 x number 3 cards (4 each of mauve, orange and blue), 4 x number 4 cards (green), 7 ticket cards.

06+, 2-6 players, best with 4, 10 mins. This one to O. Have also given copies to C and V.

By
06+, 2-6 players, best with 4, 10 mins. One to C for 5th birthday and one for V.

Still a decent game for kids that I can get behind and play. Joyous art and a quick, meaty theme. Why not?

This is the kiddie one with the plastic cats and dogs. Played a few times when my son was young (that's a while ago now).

Ho hum, another Reiner game. It's like most of his others, fine, balanced, and boring.

great kids game, lots of fun bits, playable for lots of different ages/stages....and only $11! This is a steal for such a cute game that kids love!!!

Meh. A Knizia design for kids, that obviously doesn't really move me. Will be fun with my son in many moons from now, but for daddy's and other adults to play on their own? Not so much...

Rated as a kids-with-grownups game. My 5 year old likes this one, and I will play it with her anytime she asks.

By
My youngest likes this game when we play but never asks for it, I wonder why?

By
My kids (6 and 8) love this one! At the moment, I play my cards randomly instead (pick-ups to the back of my hand, play cards from the front of my hand), and I still win a fair few games, but the kids are certainly enjoying the decisions and the Take That mechanics.

[MRU] Three plays. Went over well with one group, went 'splat' with another. I'm feeling it's a fun filler with a goodly dose of subtle evil.

By
basic family fun card game with cool cat and dog pieces.

(KIDS) I admit it... the dogs and cats in this game are cute. And, my kids love them. The problem is that my kids just aren't as interested in playing the game as they are in playing with the cute dogs and cats. I see that there are some choices to be made, but few meaningful choices. We enjoy it for the cute parts, but not the game play.

Fast action, easy to learn with great artwork and cute little dogs and cats.

By
To me, clowns aren't funny. In fact, they're kind of scary. I've wondered where this started and I think it goes back to the time I went to the circus, and a clown killed my dad.

Decent card game. There are others I'd much rather play, though.

Cool Game. Quick learn. Subtle strategy

Surprisingly, this was great fun. It is a very simple game that kids can play. A fair amount of 'gotcha' involved, but it can only be taken for what it is. This will be a regular filler.

Good kids game

Clever little game. The theme really could have been anything, but the little cat and dog pieces and the funny flea artwork make the game even more fun for kids. The game has some interesting mechanics that generally keep the scores close.

Better than most children's card games (ie Uno), but the game itself is not terribly interesting. Still - can be fast and furious fun.

One of the big K's more disappointing titles.

There is a strong "pick on the leader" aspect to this game. It is good as long as you don't mind being brutal/having brutal things done to you. And you can always arrange your cats and dogs if the rest of the game is letting you down.

I really enjoy this little filler…but it appears that I'm the only one. I'm not sure why, but no one else in my game group likes this game.

By
A fun family game. Cute components. Pretty decent for teaching kindergarteners and 4 year olds very simple addition. More fun for kids than adults, but a nice break from UNO. No reading necessary. UPDATE: Now that my kids are older, we don't play this much. I'd say kids past 8 probably lose interest.

A very light, definitely a kids game. but good quick fun.

Feuerschlucker. Chaotic and annoying take-that card game. Some of the cards look quite similar at first glance which doesn't help.

6 out of 10
By
A very cute, fluffy game that plays well with different numbers of players. If you're a cat lover like I am, you'll have to forgive them for making the dogs worth twice as much as the cats!

By
Maybe for T.J.

5.5 out of 10
By
Quick filler/kids' game that is mildly amusing.

7 out of 10
By
Great game for the kids, though it needs more than 2 players to really become interesting. Plastic dogs and cats increase the interest level for the kids and they like the cartoony artwork though it's not my cup of tea. Still haven't figured out how the acrobats can be effective - we avoid using them unless there's no alternative, but I guess they could become a factor in a 5 or 6 player game.

5 out of 10
By
a very light filler that would be good for young kids.

A light fun game with little strategy, but with delightful components.

Great little kids game. Gave this to a 7 year as a gift, perfect. After playing it, had to buy one for our house as well.

Great game for kids to play alone or with their parents...I can't see myself pulling this out to play w/ just my friends though.

Components: Cool dog and cat figures for keeping track of points. Simple, unattractive graphics on the substandard cards. Experience: There are choices to be made, but not strategic ones. The kids like it, but there isn't anything for adults. First Played: 2009-04-18 Last Played: 2009-04-19 Eagerness to Play Again: Never Plays (3): 3 players: 2 4 players: 1

Find the feuerschlucker set better. Game doesn't seem to work well with dogs and cats.

Too simple, kinda mean. But the boy likes it.

Difficult to rate. A group of adults is likely to be bored, but the game is very playable with young children.

Kids loved this for ages (4-6yo). Recommended.

Just a little too much chaos for my blood. But the game is so feather weight...nay, flea weight, that you can't feel too much one way or the other.

6 out of 10
By
Very simple kids game that my 7 year old enjoys from time to time. He is progressing to more complicated and involved games though, so I imagine this will rarely see the table until my 1 year old is old enough to take part.

Essentially the same game as Feuerschlucker, and correctly titled "Reiner Knizia's Amazing Flea Circus" to avoid confusion with Zirkus Flohcati. Players play cards face up in front of them to attract cats and dogs to their exhibits. The cats and dogs are worth points and can come from the pool or opponents. Very light, but surprisingly fun. Lots of laughs in this one, and the pieces are marvelous.

5 out of 10
By
Too easy to hurt the leader, so it's extremely self-balancing. Also tends to overstay its welcome if people are overzealous about playing Lions. And the spectator tokens are kind of hard to count at a glance. I like the theme a lot, though. The Flea Circus translation looks kind of dumb in comparison.

By
A cute simple card game for groups. Match cards to take points from your right-hand neighbor, or play special cards for other typical effects. Good for kids: my 5-yr old knows all the rules well, but the strategy is beyond her...

By
This is a great kids game. That said, with 3 small tweaks, we made it a good filler for adults (or kids slightly older than 6) looking for a quick time killer.

Luck / Randomness based on the card draw. Cute flea theme, but the animal pieces are deformed looking. The game runs longer with less players.

By
A favorite of my 6 yr old son. Highly recommended as a children's game that parents can enjoy playing with their kids.

By
A terrific, word-free card game for kids, especially girls. Adorable little cats and dogs & you gather them by playing cards. Simple but still a game, *excellent* choice for those with kids just big enough to hold a hand of cards.

5 out of 10
By
A filler aimed at kids. This has a huge hit the leader aspect and can drag on past its welcome with the maximum of 6 players. Probably best with no more than 4.

This is a pretty good children's game. Great bits.

[5 plays] Light, fun little game, good for a filler or with kids. When I first saw this, I thought it was really overproduced--does a simple card game really need to come with a boxful of plastic cats and dogs?--but I've come to appreciate it. The animals are just the thing to keep a fidgety kid distracted till it's their turn again. And the dogs really stack into cheerleader pyramids very effectively.

(As of 2 plays) A lot of this kid-friendly filler's charm comes from the little plastic dogs and cats that serve as scoring markers, but the actual gameplay is quick, simple, and random without being totally mindless. ...ok, it's pretty mindless, but there are lots of LITTLE PLASTIC DOGS AND CATS. 1 year verdict: LITTLE PLASTIC DOGS AND CATS

Fun little card game. The kids love the cute plastic dogs and cats.

This is a kid's game pure and simple. The dogs and cats, though, are a great way to keep score AND keep the kids interested.

Rated a 6 as a compromise for a kid's game...probably wouldn't play it with adults.

By
Simple, quick and fun little filler games with lots of luck and a take that element. Massively overproduced in terms of the plastic cat and dog figures included in the game, they could easily have been tokens, but overall a nice, short if played with 6, somewhat chaotic filler. I would probable pick something like cowabunga or poison over this if I had a group of adults wanting a silly fun little filler, but I might pick this if there were some children playing

A nice, light, fast fun filler card game. A lot of take that, but fun with it. Similar to the game Rififi. Happy to play this any time.

At first I was enamored with Flea Circus but really it is entirely too random and there is essentially no strategy. (Read: UNOish) The components are great and the game could work well for very young children, maybe 3-5 years.

6 out of 10
By
Very nice cleanable cards. Good graphics for kids and the subject matter is perfect for my grandsons, one of whom loves dogs and the other cats. Therefore one tries to get the cats, the other the dogs, and if they tie that is fine with them.

6 out of 10
By
Fun parts! Using the cats and dogs for scoring is tremendous! Silly game -- I don't play it a lot, but it is cool for parties.

6.5 out of 10
By
Yes it looks childish but it's a fun game with a tremendous "screwage" factor.

PRO - Enjoy playing this with my kids although my daughter spends more time 'making change' from the middle to swap dogs for cats than she does planning her next turn. Components are great for the target audience. CON - None really as long as you realize it is a game for adults to play with children. I would not consider this a filler for adults.

7 out of 10
By
Playable with 2 but better with more.

6 out of 10
By
Not challenging enough for adults and not easy enough for younger children - an important lesson here - if they can't hold a hand of five cards they can't play the game. A difficult game to find the sweet spot with players for. Late Primary school seems about right.

By
I don't know about the game play yet, but my 3yo loves the mini dogs & cats!

5.251 out of 10
By
One play -- some very nice dog and cat pieces come with the game but unfortunately the card stock is not up to the same standard. Initial impressions are the cat/dog pieces are a bit of overkill for a simple game, but willing to give it another go in the right environment (ie when my child gets a bit older to understand the rules)(16/12/08) UPDATE: Initial impression was right, a relatively straightforward card game with impressive plastic cat & dog counters Rating decrease from 6 to 5 simply as I have more alternate games I wish to play, but still an option if playing with kiddies (4/12/11). UPDATE To be honest, I keep this basically for the bits! (Rating 5.251 Jan 17)

Super fun for 8 year olds, with a bit of cunning and nastiness to keep the grown-ups interested as well. This will be going onto the "give to people with kids as a gift" list.

6 out of 10
By
Good kids game. Though the kids seemed more interested in playing with the little cats and dogs than playing the game. easy for the 8 year old. 6 yo had a little trouble.

7.5 out of 10
By
Disregard this game's low rating; it has some neat Knizia twists to it, and plays quickly with small or large groups. This one comes out way more often than just when we only have time for a filler.

By
Sold in auction.

By
Works OK but a bit too simple as an opener

6.5 out of 10
By
Great fast-playing lightweight filler. Easy to teach and learn. There is a high degree of chance, but it is fun to take spectators from the leader, only to have them taken by someone else. I have yet to win. (A good thing for this sort of game.) Okay with 3P, but best with 4P or 5P. (More chaos is a good thing for this game.) I prefer the art in this one to RK's Flea Circus.

6.5 out of 10

Must try and attract as much spectators as possible while performing acts. Plays fast, simple and plain fun. Nice intermediate card game.
