Very interesting topic, but the game didn't appeal much to me. Besides the map was ugly.

Landing sequence a bit convoluted, but then plays fairly standard. Nice maps. Uses Air Bridge to Victory system.

Large and colourful map - thin counters. There is a lot of dice rolling but it appears to be a solid simulation of the actual battle. See my review for more details: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/328914

Yet to play ... have a lot of Crete games (SPI's Descent on Crete, AH's Air Assault on Crete/Malta, S&T's Paratroop mini, Gamers' Hunters from the Sky, GDW's Europa Marita-Merkur/Balkan Front, various SL & ASL scenarios). It's got Aussies and Fallschirmjager ... what more do you need? #183

Don't have a table the map will fit on, rules look interesting, may up the rating if I can ever get a table to play it on.

Probably the best game on the subject at this scale pending the upcoming release of the GTS Operation Mercury game. The system is fairly clean, but the assault / maneuver combat is a bit fiddly and creates an unnecessary layer of work / complexity. I found the maneuver combat mechanic to be rarely beneficial to the attacker, and that the attritional nature of the assault combat mechanic to be best for the German player as its forces were much less brittle than the Allies (the Allied dead pile was gigantic at the end of the game). It would appear that the designer rightly abandoned this dual mechanic in later designs using a similar system. Nonetheless, the game was fun to play and a close run thing in the early going. There are big swings back and forth between hope and despair for each player. Once the FJ captures an airfield (Maleme can be captured most every time within the first 3-4 turns with competent play), the ball quickly starts rolling downhill for the Allies, And that is probably fairly historical.

Perhaps my favorite non-series game from GMT (though I think Medieval has finally dethroned it). Quite exciting, and plays like a simplified Eastern Front Van Bories game. Check it out if you can find it.

Awesome map a real upgrade from descent on Crete from AH. Allows more than just the taking of the 3 airfields.

Nice and innovative wargame-mechanics, but basic campaigns just don't make any use of them. Germans just jump in and then just pour their might on Commonwealth hedgehogs on airports with no creativity used at all. Haven't played full advanced campaign though so cannot comment how it fares.

Only play once a few years ago. We liked the system but needed to replay to get better feeling for it.

By
Looking forward to this one.

Gene Billingsley Operation cobat system at his best. Crete is a nightmare for both players (scattered paratroopers, ineffective british commands) and the introduction of both the strategic Crete map and the naval part is really a nice touch. Only bad effects is on my heart when I see my fallschirmjaeger drop everywhere (sometime also drowning in the egean sea) instead than in the carefully selected drop zone. Any serious student of airborne operation must have this one.

Good simulation of the airborne assault on Crete in 1941. 9 scenarios come with the game, including the campaign game. Game play is i-go/you-go with headquarters used for organization and there are quite a few units - most of them quite brittle. Overall, an interesting game with clear rules, a decent map, and poor quality counters.

Excellent game, easily the best Crete game ever made. Setup is a snap, play runs pretty smoothly, even with the naval stuff thrown in, and everything generally works. Remarkably well researched and well designed. Very hard to win campaign as the Brits, but I've done it.I do have a few minor problems, though.1) Charts are printed on both maps, so I had to scan them to play the smaller scenarios.2) The combat result of "F" (fatigue) really should be called disorganized. I got pretty confused over this until I figgered it out.3) For the first few turns, almost all of the action takes place on in very few hexes, leading to horrible stacking problems. Scanning and enlarging to make my own "supermaps" fixed this, but it was always a pain until I bought a scanner.

Based on GMT's AirBridge to Victory & Operation Shoestring system. Excellent WWII Crete air assault game with a side-show naval game. Well done and a must play for Vance Von Borries game design fans.

Plays very interesting for the first 3 days (9 turns) as the Germans drop in their troops and the British struggle with poor command and control & some poor quality troops to try and inflict heavy losses on better quality German paratroops. The next 3 days can start to get pretty boring as German reinforcements airland at captured airfields or land at captured ports & really start to push the Commonwealth back until they get to the point of evacuation. Then it's just a race to evacuate or cut off the evacuation points. Of course none of this is to say the Germans can't have a disasterous initial drop and suffer heavy losses that allow the Commonwealth to hold on longer, but still after 5-6 days (15 turns or so) it gets a bit burdensome.

By
Solo'd to test the rules. Not bad.

The most enjoyable Crete game out there with an interesting naval subsystem. A bit detailed and dated, but still very good.

Adjusted system from the original GMT Operational Series. Have played twice and would play it again. A good historical study on the Crete campaign.

More detailed than the AH version. But I miss the non-combat units that the AH version had.
