Description

Black Sea * Black Death is a simulation-game for 2 to 4 players of the Soviet amphibious operations conducted in early February of 1943 as a part of Operation Gory/Morsky (Mountains/Sea).

The objective of Operation Morsky was to surround and take the port city of Novorossisk, opening the way to a drive on Anapa which cut the main supply line keeping the German 17th Army alive in the Kuban-Taman area.

The game covers a battle of 9 1/2 days on a scale of one half mile per hex (800 meters) and one turn per day. Fighting takes place on beaches, in mountains, in an industrial city and in the air overhead, with the units involved being mostly of battalion or company size (roughly 100 men per strength point), with naval units representing one ship or two boats, and air units each representing ten aircraft.

There are some unusual concepts in the game system, as well as a considerable amount of detail.

Game Scale:
Turn: Impulses = 4-5 hours, 5-6 impulses per day
Hex: 880 yards / 804 meters
Units: Company to Regiment

Good game.

Played previously, but not to completion. Mixed feelings about this one. A tense and chaotic situation but a somewhat overloaded sequence of play which for me has been replaced by the Gamers OCS series.

Partially played (solitaire). Initiative bidding makes it less-than-ideal for solitaire play.

Played it many years ago; loved it; made miniatures scenarios out of it. Would very much like to play it again. Though, I always thought it was called "Black Black Sea Death" ...

Absurdly heavy game on an obscure battle.

When this game first came out it would have rated a 8. I can't handle the detail or time required at this point in my life. This is PhD level gaming.

USR A little cumbersome, but one of Jack Radey's best. I sincerely hope he gets the new version out eventually.

#459 Added to collection via eBay April 2006. Reviews of this game seem to be universally positive.

Would love to call this a ten because the coolness factor for this one is way up at eleven, but I don't think we ever got this one right, and I am no stranger to complicated games. I suspect that it wasn't tested thoroughly enough, say it ain't so Jack.

A nourished historical simulation for hardcore gamers. The game system has been well received. Designer Jack Radey is mystified by his left-winged thinking too. GMT is going to print a new edition.

This has a rulebook signed by Jack Radey, and Jack made a custom modifcation of the map where a slope was omitted from the costal invasion zones.

Needs an updated 2nd edition - great situation - Soviet WW2 amphibious invasion(!), extremely well-done airpower rules. Needs a new r/b though.

Great Peoples Wargame about a little known Soviet amphibious to try and cut off the retreating German 17th army from getting back to the Crimea in early 1943 after the Stalingrad disaster. A decent amount of work to set up and play but great historical realism and atmosphere. Another one for my Vassal wishlist.
